Rotary Hosts Texas 4000
Once again, our Rotary Club hosted the group of 21 (or so) Texas 4000 bicyclists as they had a layover in our City.  Dick Arie is the one that has organized this for the past three years now and our Club has been happy to cover the expenses of the meal.  This year the meal was prepared and served by the ladies at Grace United church in their new area.  From there Brad Lake, Ken Kay, and a few others at Agland gave them the opportunity to drive some very large (size and dollar value) green machinery.  It is a lot of fun to watch Gord Roebuck sweat while these City fold drive his equipment around the yard.  The next morning the riders were hosted by the Border City Club and served a hearty breakfast before hitting the road to Vegerville.  Each morning they gather in a circle and share a story and/or state who they are going to pledge their day of riding to; in memory of someone who died of cancer, someone they are thankful for, or someone that is currently struggling.  Very moving.

Loans that change lives

Our Rotary Club of Lloydminster has donated $1500 per year to KIVA since 2010, totalling $9151.

This money has been lent out and repaid in 1649 loans with a total value of $41,725 in loans!

We contribute $25 to a loan along with other KIVA members to fully fund one individual, helping minimize our risk.  An average loan request is about $1500.

Name: Tomas

Country: Honduras

Loan Amount: $900

Disbursed Date: July 18, 2016

Tomas’s Story

Tomas lives in a community of Intibucá, Honduras. He is 58 years old and makes a living cultivating potato and corn for 30 years. He also drives a public bus. One of his main goals is to give his children the best education possible. He strives to achieve it every day. Despite his work and effort, Tomas and his family have some limitations. For example, their community lacks electricity and they are forced to light candles or kerosene lamps.

Tomas requests a loan to finance a solar system to improve the living condition of his family and make it easier for his children to study in the evenings.

Name:                    Norotiana

City, Country:          Antsirabe, Madagascar

Loan is for:             10 piglets and 2 tons of pig feed

Loan Amount:          $800

Loan Length: 14 months

Disbursed date:        May 6, 2016

# of lenders: 32 (one of which is our club)

Story:

Norotiana is a young 31 year old woman. She lives with her husband and his three children. She has a chicken-raising business.

Norotiana has already had loans from Vahatra in the past for developing her business of raising chicks.

Norotiana’s previous loans enabled her to acquire new clients. She bought 200 chicklings and 500kg of grains to feed them.  She was able to earn substantial profits selling chickens.

She is currently raising hogs, an activity that she launched two years ago. She is seeking a new loan to buy 10 piglets and a sufficient supply of pig feed. She is still raising chickens as well.

She hopes to earn more profits in order to bolster her savings and build a house on the land that she bought with the profits from the last loan.

Fort McMurray Fire Relief Fund

The Rotary District 5370 Charitable Foundation has established the “Fort McMurray Fire Relief Fund” to assist in the rebuilding of that city following this tragic fire.  The Charitable Foundation is now ready to accept donations, for which tax receipts will be issued.  The Foundation will rely on an independent committee of Fort McMurray stakeholders (including the Rotary clubs and the municipality) for advice on disbursal of the funds.

Donations may be from individuals or corporations.  Rotary clubs may wish to facilitate this process by collecting donations, and then forwarding either the individual cheques or a cheque drawn on the club’s account for the total amount, along with a list of the donors and their addresses and postal codes.

Please make cheques payable to:  "Rotary District 5370 Charitable Foundation" and forward to:
